First person and third person perspectives in the study of ethics have become the norm in the West. Recently, research on medieval philosophy suggests the existence of a second person perspective, and this was found in Aquinas’s work on virtue ethics. This academic breakthrough could have had a profound impact on contemporary ethics studies. However, due to the professionalization of research methods in medieval philosophy research, and the stereotypical views held against Aquinas in academia, only a few scholars have noted the second person perspective in Aquinas’s virtue ethics. Therefore, this presentation uses methods of contemporary ethics (classification, description and analogy) to reinterpret the second person perspective in Aquinas’s virtue ethics from a macro level point of view. Borrowing from cutting edge theories from cognitive science and psychology, the paper argues Aquinas’s second person perspective is compatible with human cognition and has important illuminating implications in the study of contemporary ethics.
