Pottery has been widely used in the daily lives of the Ancient Greek people. They appear in all kinds of private and public places, and are used to store water, wine, and olive oil. For centuries, artists in workshops decorated pots with images, and these images provide us with an opportunity to understand the daily lives, thoughts, and aesthetic tastes of Ancient Greek people. This presentation will first trace the development of vase painting, in terms of craft and technique, then tease out some of the research questions on vase painting. For example, the distinction between narration, description, myth, and reality, and the relationship between written material and image material. The main content of the presentation focuses on the representation of women in Attiki pottery from the 6th century BCE to 4th century BCE. These women appear to be in different age groups, different stages in life, and diverse locations. Some women are goddess, some are princesses, while some are ordinary women and female slaves. Through analyzing these works, it is evident that vase paintings help understand the artistic development of vase painting, artists’ creativity and humour, and concepts of gender of the time. Between the real and the imaginary, vase paintings provide viewers with great space for different interpretations.
