In the late 1990s, a major debate on “the legitimacy of Chinese philosophy” occurred in Chinese academia. Many scholars held that the tools used to study traditional Chinese thinking are from the West, and therefore illegitimate. Indeed, the concept of “philosophy” originated from the West, and therefore rendered the concept of “Chinese philosophy” illegitimate. Recently, many scholars have discussed the use of the term “philosophy in Chinese”, as they thought it would be an answer to the debate that had occurred in the 1990s. There are two basic reasonings behind the term “philosophy in Chinese.” First, philosophy in China is unique and is therefore different from Western philosophy. The unique characteristic of philosophy in China is due to the uniqueness of the Chinese language (just as Western philosophy is rooted in Western languages). Therefore, to reflect such uniqueness, the usage of “Chinese philosophy” should be stopped and “philosophy in Chinese” should be used instead. This presentation thus consists of two parts. The first part argues that the idea of the Chinese language is the determinate of Chinese philosophy is not a new concept, and it has its own history and could be traced back to FU Sinian and ZHANG Dongsun. The second part is a philosophical discussion on the vague idea that the Chinese.
