During the late Ming and early Qing period, Augustine was first mentioned by members of the Society of Jesus, such as Michele Ruggieri and Matteo Ricci; Augustine’s thinking was mainly spread through edited conversations. In the late Qing period, biographies of Augustine were introduced, and the Confessions was published in two Chinese versions. During the Republic of China period, other than famous works done by both Catholics and Protestants, humanities’ interpretations of Augustine also complemented the existing collection, thus resulting in a diverse and rich collection of works on Augustine’s thinking. However, ideological criticism became dominant as political situations have changed.
