The introduction of the Tao Te Ching to the English-speaking world began with text translation and interpretation. In modern times, theTao Te Ching text has increasingly been identified as a “philosophical” text by the Western academic circle andwork of understanding and interpreting it hence unfolded. This lecture attempts to depict the process in which theTao Te Ching text has been received andcomprehended in foreign lands: Firstly, it tries to showthe historical and cultural origins behind various translations though sorting out the history of text translation. Secondly, it tries toexplore the richness and the mutli-facets, as well as show the space and potential of the intercultural interpretation of theTao Te Ching in the English-speaking world through comparing and contrasting the translation of theTao Te Ching’s core philosophical concepts (like Dao“道”,Ziran“自然”,Wuwei“无为”, etc.) in different versions of translation. Thirdly, it pays special attention to the time point and interpretation features of the Tao Te Ching being viewed and interpreted as a “philosophical text”. By sorting out the paradigms to which various philosophical interpretations belong, it hopes tohelp the philosophical interpretation of theTao Te Ching inthe contemporary philosophical context.
