About 100 pieces of porcelain epitaphs of Tang and the Five Dynasties have been successively unearthed around the Shanglin lake area at the junction of Cixi and Yuyao of Zhejiang province since the beginning of the 20th century. This batch of porcelain epitaphs are mainly in the shape of pot, which are very different from the tombstones in Central China. Shanglin Lake region is the main producing area of Yue kiln during Tang and the Five Dynasties, with advanced porcelain technique and a long history of pot-shape porcelain production. Local residents used local materials to make porcelain epitaphs with special texture and different shapes. As for the content, these porcelain epitaphs have not only necessary stylistic feature of excellent inscription, but also special function of recording things, detailing the four boundaries of a graveyard, specifics of the deal as well as the orientation of the coffin, which provides rare example for us to understand the local funeral custom.
