The archetype of Liangzhu culture rectangular jade (玉琮) is the cosmic axis, with square exterior and circle, hollow interior. It is like the interconnection between heaven and earth. The disk jade (玉璧) is traditionally considered as the heaven, with a hole in the center representing the entrance. Characterized by centrality, both rectangular jade and disk jade are located at the center of the stack-up cosmos layer. The ornamentations of immortal, animal face and bird ladder are all related to the worship of sun god, reflecting the myth of sun’s movement and the model of the sun’s “death and rebirth”.

Among the images related to sun worship, turtle and bird are two of the most important animal images. Through developing, designing and possessing rectangular jade and disk jade, dignitaries of Liangzhu intended to indicate their centrality in the ideological sphere within Liangzhu society, even in the scope of Liangzhu culture. The ancestors of Liangzhu culture manipulated the view of the universe and the state of consciousness with wisdom, laying the foundation for religious experience, belief and practice. Therefore, the core people of them won political power, economic influence and religious dominance. The rectangular jade and disk jade and related images are a unity of the grand Liangzhu culture divine and royalty, embodying the minification and symbolization of the holy space.
