Special Series of Comparative Politics Reading and Discussion--Seminar on Developmental State Theory Classics (3)

Release Date: 2018/4/24 11:49:45

This Seminar intends to give the Developmental State Theory a thorough and clear examination through analyzing its origin, core content and controversial issues, and will focus on leading scholars in the field and their representative works.

Firstly put forward by Chalmers Johnson, Developmental State Theory was used to explain Japan's economic miracle afterthe World War II. Some of the best prospects for the theory in the last few decades have been found in East and Southeast Asia (i.e. the Four Little Asian Dragons, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore). The developmental state model is characterized by strong state intervention, efficient bureaucratic structure, extensive regulation and planning, and close government-business relation. This theory substantially challenged the legitimate status of the Liberalism Economic Theory. In the debate of “State vs. Market”, it not only successfully obtained a position for the government-oriented development mode but also offered a feasible free market choice for the late developers.
