“Commonwealth” is an important word in English politics from the 15th century to the 18th century. Its influence on English politics began in the mid-16th century and peaked in the mid-17th century. The word comes from native English language, it meant “public welfare” and “community” at the beginning. In the 16th century, the word took on the Roman idea of “republic”, and thusly became an important word loaded with political ideology. The social and political concepts represented by the word greatly influenced the social and political practices of England. This presentation focuses on “commonwealth” – its origins, generation, communication, and practice – and discusses the role and values of politics, religion, academia and civil society in discourse construction. This is an attempt to reach new understandings on the concept of the state in transitional England.
