The Taiping Guangji consists of 500 volumes and ten tables of content. Emperor Taizong of Song Dynasty ordered the compilation on 977 CE (Second Year of Taiping Xingguo), and the project was directed by LI Fang. This large collection of stories was completed within one and half years. The expedite collection and completion of the Taiping Guangji was, from the perspective of Chinese fiction development, due to the huge accumulation of fictions during the Han and Tang era, and the suitable social environment during the early Song dynasty.

Printing blocks were carved but the collection was ceased from publication. The traditional view on fictions, which are considered inferior studies, greatly influenced the decision. The compilation and stoppage of the Taiping Guangji in the early Song dynasty reflect the difficulties faced by Chinese fictions.

The compilation of the Taiping Guangji was an important event in the history of Chinese fiction. A study on the completion process of the Taiping Guangji must be done by returning to history and restore historical processes. However, methods must be logically planned and carefully designed.
