As a border province that became part of the kingdom at a relatively late stage, Brittany was a special existence in French history. Viewed in the historical context of the formation of the modern state of France, the annexation of Brittany was undoubtedly a milestone on the road of France's unification. However, the political annexation did not equal the recognition of identity, but the beginning of the game between the "national" memory of Brittany and the French national sentiment that had spawned by the baptism of the Hundred Year’s War ever since the Duke's Era. The study attempts to take Anne de Bretagne (1477-1514), who was the Duke of Brittany and the queen of France, as the starting point, and explore her role in promoting the integration of Brittany into the Kingdom of France, while maintaining Brittany's local memories and traditions. Whether it is the historical compilation and the elaborate coinage she supported, her symbolic funeral, or the evolution of her image after her death, Anne's role actually reinforces the discord between Brittany’s local memory and the its new ethnic identity, the resulting identity crisis of which has also been internalized as part of the Brittany tradition that continues to this day.
