In 1904, France passed the Law on the prohibition of religious institutions to run schools. In the following year the famous law of separation of church and state was passed, laying a cornerstone for the contemporary French political system. These two bills received high attention by the Chinese intellectuals at the time. They were quickly translated into Chinese and sparked heated discussions. This talk will examine the translation and interpretation of the separation of French church and state in the Chinese world at that time, and analyze the different authors’ understanding of the relationship between church and state from the articles published inOriental Magazine, Wan Guo Gong Bao and Xin Min Cong Bao during 1904 to 1907.
