A Virtual Workshop in Commemoration of the Centennial of Max Weber’s Death

On June 14, 2020, the centennial of Max Weber’s death, ZJU-IAS held a virtual workshop to commemorate the great thinker. Scholars from Zhejiang University, Beijing University, Rennin University of China, Stanford University, University of Chicago, Brown University, American University, the university of Michigan joined the workshop, which was live-streamed to an audience of more than 20,000 .

Key issues in Weber’s academic contribution such as modern capitalism, state and bureaucracy, religion and its shaping of society, and his strong concern for the dramatic transformation of European and German society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, have been discussed.

The organizers and participants believe that in 2020 as the political-social landscape changes dramatically, the illusion of certainty in social sciences towards the world and the self may have been lost, or at least needs to be broken. As collective and as individuals, we may need to reopen to history and the present, and re-establish the connection between the past, the present, and the future.
