JI Zhe | France's Separation of Church and State in the Early Twenties Century and its Chinese Interpretation

Though never officially brought to discussion, the separation of religion from political power has been an unspoken premise of modern day China's political and religious relation.

On the morning of July 25, JI Zhe, Professor of sociology at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales-Université Sorbonne Paris Cité in France, gave a talk on the France's separation of church and state and its Chinese interpretation.

'Laïcité' , the French concept of the separation of church and state, product of French history and philosophy, was formalized in a 1905 law. The bill received high attention by the Chinese intellectuals at the time. They were quickly translated into Chinese and sparked heated discussions. Professor JI reviewed the different Chinese versions of the concept at the time, and analyzed articles and editorials in the mainstream publications then like Oriental Magazine, Wan Guo Gong Bao and Xin Min Cong Bao during 1904 to 1907. According to him, the French separation of church and state was an important source of China's religious modernism. It strengthened Chinese people's reflection on religion, and politics, education, science and other modernism issues as a whole. But it is a pity that ‘liberty of conscience’, the essence of French separation of church and state, has not received due attention until today, Professor JI said, it should be attached to enough importance.
