Series 6 of Comparative Politics Reading and Discussion

 

On March 24th, 2017, the reading group for comparative politics (Series 6) met at ZJU-IAS. Daniel Ziblatt’s book Structuring the State: the Formation of Italy and Germany and the Puzzle of Federalism (Princeton University Press, 2006) was the subject for discussion.

 

In the morning, the group engaged in an evaluation of the book based on the notes and comments submitted by the participating scholars. In the afternoon, panel discussion unfolded freely revolving around topics like the relationship between the structure–agency problem of comparative historical studies, contingency in comparative historical studies, the explanatory weight of the power logic in the case analysis of Germany and Italy, how the author of the book formulated his research questions, as well as how he structured the argument throughout the book.

 

Scholars and experts from East China University of Political Science and Law, Fudan University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Beijing University, University of International Business and Economics, and Zhejiang University participated in the discussion. Also present were some residential fellows from ZJU-IAS, students and other guests who were interested in the topic.
