Case Fellows

Message from the DirectorThe Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences at Zhejiang University was officially launched after three years of preparation. The Institute centers on a residential fellowship program inspired by the model of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. The Institute was envisioned to provide an environment in which fellows could be freed from teaching and administrative duties of their home institutions and focus on research and writing. It also seeks to foster exchanges and collaboration among fellows from diverse disciplines in humanities and social sciences.

Various kinds of institute for advanced studies have mushroomed in Chinese universities in recent years. However, the residential fellowship program that our institute has adopted is new to China. Whether the model can be successfully adapted to the Chinese academic environment remains to be seen because we do face liabilities of newness. But, we are blessed to have a first-rate advisory board and full support from Zhejiang University. We strive to improve our services to incoming fellows and to make our Institute a place for unrestricted curiosity, interdisciplinary cross-fertilization, and dedicated scholarship.
